November is National Family Literacy Month and Centralia Regional Library District has everything families need for this quality reading time together, from books to programming: The Reading Nook in the Junior Room is set up for families to sit and read “under the stars” on beanbag chairs around a cozy campfire all month long. On Monday, November 28, from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Monken Activity Room, Miss Rita’s Preschool Story Time returns and is all about owls. While here, check out selected books on display for reading inspiration and grab a free Handprint Tree Take and Make kit for more family fun at home. The Junior Room and Monken Activity Room are on the Library’s second floor, accessible by elevator and stairs.
The annual statewide Family Reading Night is on November 17 this year, sponsored by Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White and the Illinois Center for the Book. Learn more about Family Reading Night on its official webpage and be on the lookout for special bookmarks for the event at Centralia Library.
Centralia Library is also a proud sponsor of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program, which encourages parents and guardians to read 1,000 books or more to their child before they start kindergarten. Children at any age before kindergarten can be registered for the program at the Library any time of the year and will receive a logging journal, bookmark, and information pamphlet to get started. For every 100 books read, they will receive a sticker and a free book, and once all 1,000 books are read, they will receive a graduation cap and get their photo taken and their name on a star in the Library’s Discovery Room. All reading counts, whether it is with the parent/guardian, an older sibling, at daycare, or at the Library.
